Christina Rossetti - BiographyChristina Georgina Rossetti was born (London, England) on 5 December 1830 and died on 29 December 1894 (London, England). She was a Victorian lyric poet.
Rossetti’s parents were Gabriele and Frances. She was their youngest child; she also had two brothers and a sister, who also became writers. Rossetti was educated at home by her parents, where she studied religious texts, classics, fairy tales and novels. During 1840s, Rossetti’s father became unwell – physically and mentally. This led to financial difficulties for the family, so her mother began teaching. Rossetti became increasingly isolated at home. At 14, Rossetti had a nervous breakdown. Depression and other related illnesses followed. At this time, her mother and sister became interested in Anglo-Catholicism. Religious devotion played a significant part in Rossetti’s life. She became very ill in 1849, suffering from depression and in 1957 had a religious crisis. Rossetti was engaged three times, but never married. Two of Rossetti’s most famous poems are ‘Goblin Market’ and ‘Remember’. Also, she is known for writing the words to two Christmas carols: ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ and ‘Love Came Down at Christmas’. |
